Cloud computing is a service that offers server resources over the Internet. We provide this service from a network of physical servers – known as a Cloud – by splitting it into many virtual private servers (VPS), which customers can lease. These virtual private servers draw from a pool of processing power, memory and storage to give customers dedicated resources that can be adapted to their needs. Customers have the ability and add, remove or change server resources at any time on demand.
Whenever you have to consider a new CAPEX spend to increase or maintain IT resources, you should consider starting your Cloud journey. With no contracts and pay-after-use pricing for the hardware resources you use, you can start using the Cloud with no risk.
On-premise is a catch-all term for IT physically placed at your office location, or your own privately owned data centre. Hosted means the opposite: another company is taking care of the physical IT infrastructure. Cloud services are servers and other IT resources (including software) that are accessed via the Internet and which are highly scalable and flexible to use.
Companies, like Fasthosts, can offer hosting in a variety of formats: Physical servers dedicated to a single customer (Dedicated Servers), platform services such as web server software on underlying hardware (Web Hosting), Software as a Service where the customer buys services ‘per user’ (e.g. Microsoft Exchange Email) and Cloud Infrastructure Services which are fully flexible private virtual server instances on a shared platform (CloudNX).
Dedicated Servers are physical machines that you pay for in advance on a monthly or yearly basis for your exclusive use, including storage, memory, CPU and bandwidth. These offer simple isolation and control of your server to configure however you wish.
Cloud Servers are high performance Virtual Machine instances running in a hypervisor environment managed by Fasthosts. Cloud Servers are quick and easy to activate in seconds, and because resources are allocated from a large pool and managed from the advanced CloudNX panel, they can be increased or decreased on demand, and you only pay for what you use.
Cluster Web Hosting is a service based on a web hosting platform. You get space and resources needed to host websites but not control of the underlying operating system. A Cloud Server is a Virtual Machine where you control the operating system and can set up your own servers and storage drives.
A Cloud Server is flexible Virtual Machine within a hosted environment of shared resources. Cloud Servers are like VPSs, but with more flexibility, scalability and features that ensure that your project is not limited in terms of growth potential or additional functionality.
A Virtual Machine is an operating system and associated compute resources which are provisioned by a hypervisor, as opposed to being provisioned directly on fixed server hardware.
Virtual Servers or Virtual Private Servers (VPSs) are individual Virtual Machines based on a traditional physical server. Although some modern VPSs are based on distributed environments, they generally don’t have full flexibility of resources or contract and lack advanced features such as private networking.
Cloud Servers can have up to 500GB SSD storage per drive with a max of five 500GB drives. Additionally, shared storage drives of up to 2TB can be set up and accessed by your Server.
For maintaining performance of busy websites and applications, it’s often best to use multiple, load balanced servers as web servers. To keep website management simple across multiple web servers, it can be advantageous to keep all web server content in one place, meaning updates are always consistent. Check out our configurations for an example of shared storage architecture.
Yes, a Cloud Server can be paused and restarted as often as desired. If you select a flexible plan, you will only pay for the storage resources you have allocated to your paused server.
Whether you’re hosting a website or business application, it’s vital to have a backup strategy. The simplest way to make backups in the Fasthosts Cloud Panel is to set image copies on an automatic schedule. If you need to go back to a previous state you can simply deploy a copied image onto a new Virtual Machine.
Fasthosts uses leading technology: VMware vSphere virtualisation, HP servers, SolidFire cabinets and F5 Networks load balancing systems, as well as a fully responsive Cloud Panel designed and built in-house. You only deal with one supplier for all your cloud data centre requirements, and get access to a powerful, intuitive CloudNX Panel.

The CloudNX platform has been designed and engineered with proven VMware technology leading to best-in-class orchestration capability.
Yes, one of the great features in the CloudNX panel is the ability to log into your server via a console Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM).
Billing is calculated each month based on the usage of powered-up servers and other features such as storage and IP addresses. All charges are displayed daily and monthly in your Fasthosts control panel and you can check them at any point during the month.
You are charged on the 2nd of each month for services used in the preceding month. The day of sign-up does not affect this, so your first bill may be for part of a month only. Thereafter you are charged for complete months.
Your bill is calculated by counting every minute of active resources. CPU, RAM and licences are not chargeable when a Virtual Machine is switched off. Storage and IPs are charged unless they are deleted, whether on or off. All prices are ‘per month’ which means that months with a differing numbers of days are the same price. For this reason ‘per-hour’ prices vary slightly between months of different lengths.
We accept credit cards, debit cards and PayPal. Funds can also be placed on account in advance of future invoices.
Yes, you can view charges incurred up to midnight of the previous day at any time. You can also view an estimate of the bill at the end of the month which assumes you do not make any more changes in the current month.
No – when you enter a card when ordering your server, we only verify the card. Your card is then charged on the 2nd of each month for services used in the preceding month. Sometimes 3-D secure authentication is used to ensure your card is not being used by a fraudster, however this does not result in any cost to you.
You are only charged for what you use and charges will stop when all resources and the associated storage is deleted from your CloudNX Panel.
There are two key aspects to security in the Cloud: what the vendor does to secure the infrastructure, platform and data, and what you as a customer do to maintain security. With Fasthosts CloudNX servers, we’ve designed security from the ground up. Your data is stored in our UK data centres and isolated from other customers. The platform is also fully penetration tested to ensure the complete security of all associated systems.
Yes, selected ports are open by default. Which ones depends on if it’s a Linux or Windows server. You can add rules or change these easily in the CloudNX panel.
Yes! Cloud Servers are ideal for Magento, as it’s often difficult to predict how your resource needs will change. The flexibility of Cloud Servers makes this easier to manage. What’s more, you can install Magento in one click when deploying a Cloud Server in the Fasthosts CloudNX panel.
Yes, Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.
Fasthosts supports the latest Microsoft and Linux operating systems: Windows 2012 R2, CentOS 7, Debian 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 as well as previous versions CentOS 6 and Windows 2008 R2. It’s also possible to load ISOs of other operating systems, although these will fall outside of our standard support.
Yes, you can choose to deploy each Linux operating system either as a bare operating system or as a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP).
A monthly rate applies to all chargeable components (RAM, CPU, storage, IP addresses etc.). You pay for the percentage of use during each month (so your invoice would be the same for a 28-day or a 31-day month if your configuration was unchanged). CloudNX invoices will be separated from any other Fasthosts products billed to you on the same day.
Below is a table that will provide you with a breakdown of all the additional resources and costs that you can select. These are all configurable when you’re inside the CloudNX Control Panel.
