A domain name typically costs between £1 and £15 in the UK for the first year, but renewal prices vary wildly, sometimes 10x the introductory rate. The provider you choose also determines whether DNS management and email are included or charged as extras. We've compared 6 domain providers on those factors to help you spot the real cost, not just the headline price.

At Fasthosts, we manage more than 1.1 million domain names from UK and EU-based data centres. But this isn’t a strict ranking. Domain registrars, providers and resellers often look very similar on the surface, and for many buyers the biggest difference comes down to renewal pricing, support or account experience. That’s why we’ve assessed each provider on the same criteria, so you can compare them and choose the one that fits you best.

ⓘ

A note on terminology: Not every company that sells and manages domain names is an accredited registrar. Some operate as domain providers or resellers, working with accredited registrars to offer domain registration services. In this guide, we use “domain provider” as the broader term so that we can compare the services available to customers rather than the underlying accreditation structure.

What is a domain registrar?

A domain registrar is a company authorised to sell and manage the registration of domain names (your website’s unique address on the internet). To sell domains, registrars need permission from ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN accredits registrars and ensures they meet specific standards for domain sales. Registrars are required to complete a formal application process and agree to ICANN’s rules and policies.

However, not every company that sells domains directly to customers is an accredited domain registrar. Some domain providers operate as resellers or through arrangements with an accredited registrar, whilst still providing customers with domain registration, DNS management and other important services.

For more detail on how registrars work, see our article on what a domain registrar is.

Wondering about costs? Domain prices vary depending on the extension (like .com or .co.uk) and the registrar itself. You can read more in our guide on how much a domain name costs.

How we compared these domain providers

We assessed 6 domain providers available to UK customers on 4 criteria – first-year registration price for .com and .co.uk, renewal price, bundled extras (email, SSL, DNS management), and support channels.

We have first-hand knowledge of our infrastructure and pricing, but for other brands we used publicly listed features and prices, and Trustpilot ratings.

What to look for in a domain provider

  • Renewal price, not just the first-year price. Most domain providers offer deep discounts for the first year and charge substantially more on renewal. Check the renewal cost before you register.
  • Bundled extras vs paid add-ons. Some providers include email, SSL and DNS management with every domain. Others charge for each separately. A £1 domain with £3 email and £5 SSL costs more than a £8 domain with everything included.
  • Transfer policy. ICANN rules let you transfer a domain to another provider after 60 days. Check whether your provider charges a transfer fee or makes the process difficult.

What’s the best domain name provider for UK customers?

1. Fasthosts

Fasthosts provides domain registration and management services for UK customers, with more than 1.1 million domain names under management. For .uk domains, Fasthosts operates as a registrar, and for other extensions, domain registrations are provided through an accredited registrar (IONOS SE). Our .uk domain infrastructure also supports our hosting, email and VPS products, so if you register a domain with Fasthosts and later need hosting, everything stays under one roof with a single control panel and support team.

I recommend the service with Fashosts.co.uk. Cristian in the technical department sorted out any issues with domain migration, DNS disputes, and web forwarding. A reliable service and cost effective.

– David, Trustpilot, 9 April 2026

With more than 17,000 reviews on Trustpilot, we hold a 4.8-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Competitive pricing on first-year domains
  • 24/7 UK-based support
  • Secure, advanced infrastructure
  • Bundled hosting and email options
  • Bulk discount for customers registering more than 50 domains

Cons:

  • Renewal prices are higher than introductory deals

Every domain purchase includes free DNS management, domain forwarding and a control panel for managing nameservers and DNS records. Plus, customers can pre-buy credits to get a discount on their domain renewals!

Professional Email is available as a bundled add-on from £1/month.

2. 123 Reg

A popular domain registrar and provider in the UK, 123 Reg offers simple tools and easy domain management tailored to small businesses, individuals and domain hosting beginners.

With more than 21,000 reviews on Trustpilot, 123 Reg holds a 4.1-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Affordable introductory offers
  • User-friendly interface

Cons:

  • Higher renewal prices
  • Reviews suggest experiences of confrontational upselling

Every domain registration includes free DNS management and a control panel for managing DNS records and nameservers. 123 Reg also includes UK-based support by phone, live chat and ticket. The drawback is pricing transparency. Renewal rates are less prominent than the headline offers, and the advertised .com deal only gives you the first year at that price when you buy 3 years up front.

3. GoDaddy

GoDaddy manages over 80 million domain names globally, making it the largest registrar in the world. That scale means an extremely wide range of extensions (over 500 TLDs) and strong brand recognition.

With more than 136,000 reviews on Trustpilot, GoDaddy holds a 4.5-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Extensive domain extensions available
  • Integrated marketing and website tools

Cons:

  • Pricing can be confusing due to promotions

Every domain registration includes free DNS management, domain forwarding and access to GoDaddy’s broader setup tools, including AI-assisted branding and site features. The trade-off is in the pricing structure. The headline deals on both .com and .co.uk are first-year offers only, and they require a longer upfront purchase, so the low entry price doesn’t reflect the long-term cost.

4. Names.co.uk

Names.co.uk is a domain and hosting company offering domains alongside email, hosting and website builder services. This is a suitable choice for UK-based small businesses that want local customer support and a straightforward approach to domains, email and hosting. But their renewal prices are some of the highest on this list.

With more than 5,700 reviews on Trustpilot, names.co.uk holds a 4.3-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Good selection of hosting and email services
  • Straightforward domain management tools

Cons:

  • Renewal pricing less competitive than some rivals

Every domain registration includes DNS control, domain and email forwarding, and access to an Online Control Panel for managing DNS records and nameservers. names.co.uk also offers UK-based domain support, which adds a human help angle for buyers who want more guidance. The downside is that renewal pricing is higher.

5. IONOS

IONOS is a popular hosting and domain company, known for low first-year prices and bundled extras like SSL certificates and email hosting. IONOS is better suited to more technical users and small-to-medium businesses that prioritise performance and security.

ⓘ

Full disclosure: Fasthosts and IONOS are both part of the IONOS Group (IONOS Group SE). However, they operate independently with separate infrastructure, pricing and support teams.

With more than 39,000 reviews on Trustpilot, IONOS holds a 4.7-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Low introductory prices
  • Includes SSL certificate and 2GB email with domain

Cons:

  • Some customers report confusing billing practices, such as price increases for renewals

Every domain registration includes easy DNS setup through Domain Connect, domain lock and a free Wildcard SSL certificate with the initial contract. That gives IONOS a stronger security angle than some domain providers at the entry level. The drawback is that the lowest advertised prices are introductory 1-year offers.

6. Namecheap

Namecheap offers affordable pricing and a simple, user-friendly interface, making it a good choice for budget-conscious individuals and beginners.

Namecheap's main advantage is transparent pricing – the gap between introductory and renewal prices is smaller than most competitors.

With more than 20,500 reviews on Trustpilot, Namecheap holds a 4.2-star rating as of April 2026.

Pros:

  • Competitive domain renewal pricing

Cons:

  • Email hosting costs extra
  • Fewer UK-specific services compared to some local registrars

Every domain registration includes free DNS management and a broad account dashboard for handling domain settings. That makes Namecheap easy to like if day-to-day control matters to you.
