A guide to the perfect domain
Choosing a domain is pivotal in starting your business the right way. It’s how your customers find you in the first place and how they’ll keep coming back to your site in the future. So, if you don’t choose wisely, you might be on the road to getting lost among the masses.
And your domain can be just about anything – as long as you follow a few simple tips.
Here’s our advice for finding the best domain for your website.
Make it stick
Your domain name needs to be memorable enough that potential customers will remember it, so they can use it to find your site again and again. So don’t overcomplicate things. Keep it simple, snappy and easy to spell.
Use keywords
Using keywords will allow Google to learn what your site is about and contribute to your SEO ranking. You’ve likely got a list of target keywords about your site already, and if you don’t it’s a good idea to make one. You can reuse this in your content as well as part of your domain.
A keyword in your domain may also contribute to your ranking on the search engine results page (SERP) as well as telling Google what you’re about, so could help boost your business to the top of potential customers' radar.

Pick a TLD
If you’ve not delved into domains before, you may be thinking ‘what’s a TLD’? This stands for top level domain, which is found at the end of the URL, e.g. .com or .co.uk.
So, why is it important to pick one? There’s a few different reasons. If you’re a business which is specific to a particular country, it might be a good idea to choose a country-code TLD, like .fr. This not only shows your customers where you’re from, but also helps you to target a specific audience.
Another benefit is if you use a well-known, generic TLD, customers are more likely to trust your site as they’ll be familiar with that TLD. But you’ve got so many different options to choose from to suit your business, for example .photography or .blog.
Register quickly
Once you’ve chosen your perfect domain, make sure to register it quickly. You don’t want to have put in all that effort, only to have someone else snap it up. And before you do, double check you can use your domain on socials. We’ll come back to this later, but it’s a good idea to use the same name on socials as on your site so you can be found easily across platforms.
Another tip when registering your domain is to register multiple versions. Variations, typos and misspellings are all ways that your domain can be mistaken for someone else. So register any possible variations so that they all lead back to you.
A few things to keep in mind:
- If you include numbers in your domain, do your visitors type them out as digits or words? Register multiple variations to cover this.
- If your domain is likely to be misheard or misspelt when spoken, also register multiples to account for any mistakes.
- It’s a good idea to get multiple extensions for your domain. For example, you might already have a .com, but you should also get a .co.uk or other popular extensions so no one can hijack your brand.

How to create a high-performing website
Once you’ve got your domain name registered, you can start creating your website. This might be quite a daunting process, especially if you’ve never dabbled in website building before. But don’t panic! Having a good looking site is the key to pulling in customers, and it’s easier than you think. There are so many tools out there to help get you started and you don’t need any previous design or dev skills.
For example, our Website Builder comes with AI tools to help you generate pages, content and images, plus drag and drop features and tons of templates for any business type.
Create a smooth customer journey
You want it to be as easy as possible for your customers to get from start to finish (and convert). That means making sure they can find the info, service or product they’re looking for quickly and easily without too much searching or waiting for your site to load.
Your navigation bar should be clearly labelled with the links going to the right places. It’s also a good idea to keep options to a minimum. If a customer clicks the navigation bar to be greeted with 30 different links, it might put them off and slow them down in getting to where you want them to be. Every click they make is a chance for them to leave. And with the average attention span of online users being 8 seconds, you don’t want to increase that chance.
Make sure contact info is clear
There’s nothing more annoying than going on a site to contact a business and not being able to find their contact information. If you want your customers or potential customers to be able to get in touch, keep your telephone, email and address (if applicable) in a visible spot, with a simple to use contact form.
Create your palette
A lot of website builders (like ours!) give you the option to save your own colour palette so you can keep using the same colours throughout your site. You should decide this early on in the build process.
When doing this, think about how you want customers to perceive you and what kind of persona your business has. It might be worth looking into colour theory and how certain shades make people feel. This will all help in building a cohesive, aesthetically pleasing site.
Keep it consistent
In the same way you need to create a colour palette, you should also set brand guidelines that every page on your site should follow. This includes the tone of voice of the content you write, the kinds of imagery you use, colours and even fonts.
A messy site is one that changes appearance drastically on every page. You want your customers to know that every click keeps them on your site, so don’t make any changes that would make them think otherwise.
Don’t forget about SEO
SEO dictates how highly you rank in Google’s search results. The better your SEO, the higher your rank. If you’ve already got your target keywords from when you registered your domain name, use this to add to your content.
Sprinkle keywords throughout your site, but don’t overdo it. Google favours quality content over quantity, so don’t just use keywords for the sake of it.
The headings of your pages are an ideal spot to place keywords, but make sure they’re not too long. Your headings need to be punchy and get the information across quickly to grab your customers’ attention.
