In December, Fasthosts announced a ‘launch your own creative business’ competition, targeted at the growing UK craft and lifestyle sector, incorporating everything from sewing to carpentry.
At the time, we talked about how the sector generates an annual retail economy of over £5.4bn in the UK alone, crafting is certainly here to stay. Recently confirmed by the Telegraph, alongside an image of Cara Delevigne knitting,‘the industry is in rude health’ and showing no signs of slowing down. We wanted to show our support to UK crafters and, in particular, those keen to take the next steps into ecommerce.
Home crafters were invited to submit a pitch about how using Website Builder, amongst other prizes on offer, would improve their business. Over 100 creative pitches were submitted and carefully reviewed by a team of judges. We are pleased to confirm that we have a winner and several runners up who we would like to tell you all about.
The competition winner
‘Sew Me, Wear Me’ won the number one spot! Coming from a family of crafters, self-described ‘sewing addict’ Alice learnt to sew as a child, progressing to jewellery and knitting over the years. After her child was born, and while on maternity leave, Alice was inspired to pick up crafting again. After buying a discounted sewing machine and taking a series of courses, Alice created her own sewing patterns, which she sold on Etsy, and beautiful children’s clothing – adding vintage touches to make them extra special.
“Around that time, I started my love affair with Liberty fabrics,” she confesses. “I now have four PDF children’s wear sewing patterns: a dress, pyjamas, skirt and personalised apron.
“I’m now in the early stages of three new patterns I hope to release over the course of this year, in addition to running more beginner and intermediate workshops. I am also putting together some kits to sell at workshops which will include all the materials and instructions required to make it easier for people to keep going with their sewing adventure. And, vitally, I hope to start selling these online too.”
Alice supports her activities via blogging and social media platforms like Instagram, and one of her business goals is to set up a YouTube channel to showcase her own sewing tutorials, all of which will link to her patterns.
To start with, and with so much to focus on over the year, Alice needs a website that requires less maintenance, with fewer clicks for customers to buy her patterns. That’s where Fasthosts and Website Builder come in, and we have been working with Alice on making the most of her website to give her business the boost she requires, and look forward to sharing this with you soon.
Coming in as close runners-up to Sew Me, Wear Me, we are delighted to confirm that both Buffylo Creative and Miss Moffat Yarns came in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. We will be touching base with the main winner and our runners-up regularly to see how they are getting on.
Congratulations to all of the winners, we look forwards to sharing your success stories!
