Bare Metal Servers give you full power and total control over your server infrastructure. Like a Dedicated Server, you get resources that are dedicated to you. But Bare Metal, like virtual servers, also gives you the flexibility to start, stop and pause your server and get down-to-the-minute billing, hosted on our CloudNX platform.

A Bare Metal server is just like having your own server in an office server room or data centre. You can easily log in as an administrator and install your applications and manage resources. If you just want to be able to get going quickly with standard functions like hosting websites or email then add a server management tool like Plesk or cPanel.

If your projects are more resource-demanding, then choose a Bare Metal server with higher levels of RAM, and a more powerful processor. For short-term power, choose a pay-as-you-use server with hourly billing.

The Fasthosts Premium Bandwidth add-on is an extra feature that you can configure your server with. This feature gives you a base-level boost in public bandwidth, with the ability to get up to 10Gbps bursts so you can handle unexpected short spikes in traffic.

An average server will get around 5-6Gbps TCP bandwidth, although this depends on and is affected by what the server is used for and the type of incoming/outgoing traffic.

This add-on is great for some use cases that experience a high volume of traffic with occasional large file transfers and short spikes in traffic. It isn’t suitable for uses like VPN providers, video streaming services and other high volume UDP-based services.

Virtualisation can be done with a hypervisor or virtual machine monitor (VMM) on any Fasthosts Bare Metal Server with an Intel Xeon Silver, Intel Xeon Gold, or AMD EPYC CPU.

These servers come with the technical features required to create and manage virtual machines (VMs) using a hypervisor. Using a hypervisor or VMM, you can set up several separate, completely isolated VMs with various operating systems, and operate them in parallel on a single host system (in this case, your server).

VMs share their hardware resources (processing power, RAM, disk space, network components), but cannot access files from another VM running in parallel. This ensures that only individual VMs are affected by program errors or contamination during software testing, for example. Other VMs or test environments managed by the hypervisor remain isolated and continue to work as normal.

Although the two servers are very similar, a dedicated server is much more straightforward and can be used by practically anyone. Whereas a Bare Metal Server comes equipped with complex tools and features, and is more suited to advanced users.
